Total Solar Eclipse 2017 – Carthage, Tennessee

Total Solar Eclipse 2017 – Carthage, Tennessee

After spending two nights camping in Kentucky, we packed up and headed to our final destination – the Defeated Creek Campground in Carthage, Tennessee. We arrived at around 3:30pm on August 20th, so we had plenty of time to set up camp and explore the campground. I had reserved spot #10 on the Lake Loop, and we were more than thrilled with this site!! Really, I think that all sites at this campground are pretty great, but the ones along the perimeter are just amazing. The views of Cordell Hull Lake can’t be beat, no matter where you are. It’s a pretty big campground with 155 sites for both tents and RVs, but the sites are so big so you really don’t feel packed in or on top of your neighbor. All of the sites have water and electric, which was nice and convenient. We don’t typically use electricity while we’re camping these days, but it’s nice to be able to charge the phones. The bathhouses are clean and not too busy, but they did get pretty hot and muggy in the warm weather, and after a few showers some areas of the floor were flooded. (See this campground review on The Dyrt).

Total Solar Eclipse 2017 – Stop in Louisville, KY Area

Total Solar Eclipse 2017 – Stop in Louisville, KY Area

Seeing the total solar eclipse was an adventure that we didn’t want to miss, so back in March, I started looking into campgrounds within the path of totality. We stopped in the Louisville, KY area for the first two nights of our four night trip, and that will be focus of this post. We camped at Taylorsville Lake State Park in Mt. Eden, KY, and got there just just after sunset on August 18th, so we had to set up camp in the dark. We stayed in the primitive campground, which was amazing, but our specific site, not so much. Site P02 was far from level, and pretty close to the road compared to other sites. Honestly, every other site that we saw seemed great, so just avoid P02, and you should be good to go.

Most of the sites were really big, and there was plenty of space and trees in between. The primitive camp was close to the equestrian camp, and between to two campgrounds, there were only 25 sites. These 25 campsites share a bathhouse, which was very clean and quiet. This park also has an RV campground with 45 sites, but we never step foot in that part of the park. I didn’t get many pictures from this campground because we didn’t spend all that much time here.

You’ll go and you’ll like it, dammit

On the way home from our forced family adventure to see the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse, I decided to start a new thing. We were heading back to Columbus, Ohio after 4 days of camping in Kentucky and Tennessee. On the ninth hour of what should have been a seven hour trip, we stopped to grab something to eat. The kids were grumpy, we were exhausted, and we still had three hours to go. We headed into a Wendy’s and sat down to eat, hoping the insane amount of traffic would die down. To lighten the mood, I told the kids that I was going to start a Facebook page to share our adventures, and that I was going to find a picture of them looking as pissed off as possible to use as the profile picture.
